Description

This bundle combines our Intro to Sampling Music Production lesson plan and Who Sampled Warmup Guided Activity. Two great resources to teach your students the concept of musical sampling.

Who Sampled is a great website for teaching concepts of sampling in music production by providing a side-by-side view of who artists are sampling in their songs (and where they are sampled as well)!

Soundtrap is a free browser-based full Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) where students can collaborate with each other and where teachers can assign projects directly in the DAW. Students are able to produce music from start to finish with studio-quality sounds from the comfort of their laptop. Soundtrap also works as an app on phones and tablets.

These materials introduce students to the concepts of: Samples and Sampling, Copyright law, Chopping and Flipping, and more. By the end of the lesson, students will learn the following:

  • The technique & history of sampling , as well as how sampling plays a role in producing popular music today
  • How to "chop" and "flip" samples using Soundtrap
  • The difference between sampling, remixing, and covering
  • The importance of re-using existing resources to give it a new meaning and purpose

At Building Beats, we provide podcasting, DJ and music programs that teach entrepreneurial, leadership, and life skills to New York City and LA's low-income and minority youth. We envision a world where any individual can pursue their passion and build a career out of it. To realize this vision, we empower individuals and help them become self‑sufficient, creative producers that will benefit their community while leading personally fulfilling lives.

Purchasing our lesson plans and learning materials directly supports our mission as a non-profit.
