Description

This PowerPoint is for 3rd Grade. It is the second lesson in teaching fractions. Items covered in this lesson are: Review of what a fraction is, what unit fractions are, where the denominator and the numerator are located. Then students practice identifying fractions, drawing them, and discuss whether size or shaded portions not adjacent to each other affect the fraction. There is a hands-on activity to cement the new ideas. I use it as a visual guide direct from the lesson for the students and myself. It helps keep the lesson moving smoothly as well as to stay within the 60 minute time limit. This PowerPoint also helps students to have the conversations needed to begin learning about fractions.

There are motivational ideas as the lesson progresses. For example: "High five your partner if you said ..." It is important to preview the PowerPoint before you teach the lesson so you can make adjustments to your teaching style. With a PowerPoint like this you can begin to anticipate and make adjustments during the lesson based on how well your class is learning! There is a list of materials needed on the notes of the first slide. Included with my lesson is a 'hands on' activity.

Many 3rd graders are still very concrete learners and need to physically do a math activity to help them comprehend what you are talking about abstractly. Another part of the lesson on this PowerPoint is the stated language objective at the beginning and end so you can use it to close your lesson and evaluate with your students how things went. There is a short evaluation piece near the end so you can check for learning. The last slide states what the next lesson is about. One last reason I use PowerPoints like this in my lessons is that it gives me a step-by-step way to cover the topic without having to refer to a lot of notes.

My name is Melanie Whitesides but my store name is Wonbyone. I will be posting my other PowerPoints as well. I hope you let me know how things go! Thank you!
