Description
This product will give you three different sets of graphic organizers to help students write full introductions (introductory paragraphs) for essays. Each set contains a blank organizer and a filled-in example. In general, I teach introductions by giving distinct lessons on types of sentences: hook sentences, thesis statements, and roadmap sentences (similar to a line of reasoning, or sub-points for a thesis). My organizers reflect this sequential method of teaching. Here is a brief run down of the suggested grade level for each of my three sets of organizers:
Set 1: Argumentative essay introductory paragraph on the topic of recidivism (or destiny versus free will): 9th or 10th
Set 2: Argumentative essay introductory paragraph on The Outsiders: middle school, 9th or 10th
Set 3: Argumentative essay introductory paragraph for A.P. English (Language or Lit): 10th, 11th, or 12th
All three graphic organizers are flexible in the sense that you could apply any writing topic to them. The organizers also help students visually see how they can use the words in their thesis statement (or argument) to make the other parts of their introductions.
The organizers will give you techniques for how to make a hook sentence, how to develop background information, and how to structure points in a roadmap (or line of reasoning). The second set of organizers also comes with two additional resources (embedded links) that give examples on various ways to break down a thesis: examples, steps, problem and solution, comparison and contrast, cause and effect, etc.
Overall, this is a great product meant for teachers who want to teach writing and help students become better, more confident essay writers. It's also great if you like taking other people's graphic organizers and then adjusting them for your own purposes.
