"Cracking the Code" – An Intro to Coding for K-1 (Interactive Slides & Games)

Unlock the "Secret Instructions" of Everyday Life!

Help your Kindergarten and 1st-grade students discover that they are already "mini-coders!" This interactive lesson transforms the abstract concept of computer programming into a relatable, real-world adventure. Using familiar objects like garage doors, microwaves, and video games, students will learn that code is simply a set of instructions that tells a machine exactly what to do.

What’s Included?

  • Interactive Teaching Slides: A visually engaging presentation designed for whole-group instruction.
  • "Robot Chef" video: A fun, high-energy intro video where the "silly robot" follows student "code" literally.
  • Kitty Coding Activity: Practice coding as a whole group using Blockly. Get the kitty to the ball of yarn by adding the correct amount of arrows.
  • Ready-to-Link Practice Games: A curated section where you can link your favorite beginner coding games (I added one that I created as well as games found on Code.org) for student independent practice.

Perfect for:

  • Whole-Group Learning: Present on your smartboard or projector to spark classroom discussion.
  • LMS Integration: Easily upload and link the "Practice Zone" to Google Classroom, Canvas, Seesaw, or Schoology for a seamless transition to 1-to-1 device time.
  • Computer Science Education Week: An ideal, low-prep "Hour of Code" resource for early childhood.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define "code" as a list of instructions.
  2. Identify everyday objects that use code and buttons to function.
  3. Practice sequential thinking and "debugging" through movement and play.

Teacher Tip: Use the "Robot Chef" slide to start the lesson—it’s guaranteed to get the kids laughing while they learn the importance of being specific!
