Introduction to Cryptography Project/Activity
Share

Description

This project/activity leads students through five common ciphers to give them an understanding of the different types of monoalphabetic ciphers. Students get to translate a message of their own from each cipher. Lots of students love sending messages in code, and this will give them multiple options to choose from! Great fun for a down day, enrichment project, sub plans, or icebreaker activity. Includes answer key and a template for the Caesar Shift decoder wheel.

This is a great product for an intro to cryptography. I used it with my AP CSP class as a "breather" after the AP Exam and they had a lot of fun with it. FYI - they found an error with part 2 - the "e" dot is missing in the morse code for the word "are," but they figured it out. I also would have loved a "student handout" to keep the students organized when turning it in. (i.e a worksheet that had spaces for each part) Overall, great resource that I will use again. Thank you!

Yikes! Sorry about that - I had not intended any words to be split across lines. I have fixed that formatting problem and you can redownload the file for future use with the word "night" not split.

My G/T students were struggling to grasp a PBL we were doing over Alan Turing and the Enigma Machine. I used this resource as a side project for them and it made a huge difference. The kids had a better understanding of code writing and code breaking, finding ciphers and it helped them understand function machines.
