This handout and accompanying slides are an introductory lesson on function notation. It allows students to explore how function notation can be used to represent functions in shorthand by using several graphs and scenarios. The first part of the activity has the class examining graphs together, then students work independently or in small groups to use the graphs to answer follow-up questions. There are also guided notes on function notation and how/why it is used in math.
