This versatile, comprehensive lesson (offered in Google Classroom, PPT, and PDF formats) will introduce students to rhetoric in a rigorous and relevant way by providing them with detailed notes, examples from noteworthy American speeches, numerous opportunities for practice and discussion, and a chance to show their mastery of the topic with a multiple-choice and matching assessment at the end. It also features detailed guided notes and answer keys for all of the activities included.

Materials Included:

1. 37 Editable slides (offered in Google Slides and PDF formats) that cover:

  • The definition of "rhetoric"
  • Background and History
  • The Rhetorical Triangle
  • Rhetorical Appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos) with examples and practice: through advertisements and through FDR's "Infamy" Pearl Harbor Speech
  • Rhetorical Devices (juxtaposition, anaphora, euphemism, hyperbole, asyndeton, amplification, paradox, and more!) with examples and practice: through advertisements and through Coretta Scott King's "10 Commandments of Vietnam" Speech
  • Detailed teacher notes throughout that include: presentation tips, discussion questions, and possible answers

2. Guided Notes (offered in editable Google Slides & PDF formats) for students to use as they navigate through the lecture

3. Matching and Multiple-Choice Quiz (offered in editable, self-grading Google Forms format and as a PDF) to assess their mastery of the concepts
