Help students develop a conceptual understanding of the meaning of percents and have practice estimating and approximating percentages with a variety of models and real-life scenarios before they are exposed to algorithms and methods for calculating percentages. Students’ conceptual understanding of percents is developed as students interact with hundred grids, percent bars (tape models), and number lines before moving to calculating percent of a number or converting fractions, decimals, and percents.
