No student wants to follow up a chapter of Jake Drake Know-It-All with boring questions and answers. Our solution? These comprehension activity printables. They’re aligned with the Common Core…beautifully illustrated…and will help your students capture the very essence of Andrew Clement’s work.

This product includes a comprehension activity printable for each chapter:

Chapter 1 – “Flashbacks” – Students will summarize the chapter by recalling and recording Jake’s flashbacks

Chapter 2a - “Meet Mrs. Karp” – Students will identify and infer Mrs. Karp's character traits by citing text evidence.

Chapter 2b – “Meet Mr. Lenny Cordo” – Students will recognize and record the change that Mr. Cordo undergoes in the chapter by using text evidence.

Chapter 3 – “Contest Poster” – Students will highlight information (from Chapters 2&3) when designing their own Despres Elementary Science Fair poster.

Chapter 4 – “Phil Willis – fierce or friendly?” – Students will make an inference to explain the title of the chapter, support an opinion question with evidence from the text, and highlight Willie’s character traits with evidence from the text.

Chapter 5 – “A Helping Hand” – Students will find and highlight details about Mr. Drake’s science fair ideas, infer the problem with his ideas, support an opinion question with details from the text, and infer information about the minor character, Abby.

Chapter 6 – “Serious Science” – Students will make science connections by coming up with their own science fair ideas, will put themselves in Jake’s shoes to decide what “junk” to keep, and will highlight the sequence of Jake’s actions in the chapter.

Chapter 7 – “Sophisticated Synonyms” – Students will study Andrew Clement’s word choice and redesign sentences with sophisticated synonyms.

Chapter 8 – “Characters with a Cause” – Students will study and identify cause and effect relationships.

Chapter 9 – “Dynamic Jake” – Student will learn about dynamic (or changing) characters, and highlight the changes Jake undergoes (along with the conflicts that causes the change).

Chapter 10 – “Prove It” – Students will use text evidence to support claims made about Willie and Mr. Drake.

Chapter 11 – “Last but not Least” – Students will compare and contrast the students' projects, and will also infer the theme(s) of the story.

Your students will look forward to completing each activity printable, and will be even more motivated to move on to the next chapter!!!

This was our summer reading book, this was a great way to review the book during the first weeks of school. I assigned partners to each chapter so they could work together and then present to the class a summary of that chapter.
