About the Lessons & Tasks:
During each lesson, students will work as a class to answer a math question. For two lessons this includes counting a given set and determining how many more objects are needed to make 10. For one lesson, this includes listening to or creating a math story with 2 sets of animals and determining how many there are in total. During the task part of the lesson, students will work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to apply the same problem and record their thinking.

Themes:

  • Lesson 1 - Hot Cocoa Cafe: Students help complete hot cocoa "orders" or a "cafe." There are 10 different orders. Students count the amount of marshmallows already part of the order and determine how many more marshmallows are needed to make 10. They use manipulatives to add the amount needed and represent the number combination on a recording sheet with pictures and/or numbers. This lesson also includes separate hot cocoa order mats for students to use for the purpose of counting a given amount, rather than number combinations.
  • Lesson 2 - Fishing for Ten: Students prepare ice fishing ponds for fishing. There are 10 different ponds. Students count the amount of fish already in the pond and determine how many more fish are needed to make 10. They use manipulatives to add the amount needed and represent the number combination on a recording sheet with pictures and/or numbers. This lesson also includes separate ice fishing pond mats for students to use for the purpose of counting a given amount, rather than number combinations.
  • Lesson 3 - Animals on Ice: Students will listen to or create addition stories. They'll add two sets of polar animal pictures to the Animals on Ice counting mat. Then they'll determine how many animals there are in total. They'll represent the addition story on a recording sheet with pictures and/or numbers.
