Description

This activity goes along perfectly with following the 4th grade mathematics standard:

4.MD.B.4 Make a line plot to display a data set of measurements in fractions of a unit (1/2, 1/4, 1/8). Solve problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions by using information presented in line plots.

Students love this activity because it incorporates partner work, the kinesthetic activity of “jumping the frogs”, measuring using a ruler, taking data, and creating and analyzing line plots. It also reviews knowledge that they learned from fractions, as students must add and subtract fractions. Additionally, students are encouraged to think critically about their data and create questions pertaining to their data.

It can be used as a whole group, small group or center activity. It's perfect for all types of instruction!

Happy jumping!!
