Description

Key Features of Polynomials: Color Coding Practice

This no-prep resource is a great way to get students to practice identifying the key features of polynomial functions! This resource contains six pages of practice for a total of 6 functions to work with, as well as a blank template for students to create their own polynomial function to identify the features of, or challenge a partner to solve. For each function, students are tasked with color coding the given graph to highlight the location of each key feature, and then asked to record how many of each feature there are, as well as their exact locations using appropriate notation. This is a great way for students to practice identifying key features and making a solid connection between what they see on the graph, what the feature is called, and the notation used to describe it. It's great for those learners that really need to "touch" the graphs, and can easily be used for in-class practice, homework, a quiz, or review! A full answer key is also included.

Key features include finding the: y-intercept, local minimum and maximum points, roots/zeroes, and increasing and decreasing intervals. All important features can be found using the given graphs on each sheet so a graphing calculator is not necessarily needed, however the equation of each function is provided in case it is desired.

I used these as warmups for a few days following the lesson. I used 2 each day These worked well to review the concepts/vocabulary and finding characteristics of graphs of poly functions. Students enjoyed being able to add color to their assignment.
