How to Use This Set:

With these cards and journal prompts, you will always have a problem at your fingertips. Use the cards on the carpet or in small groups—even while waiting in line. The problems vary in difficulty and are perfect for think-pair-share and for developing math vocabulary and language. Have the children extend their learning by using the included math journal prompts. Each of the 120 problems is also included as a cut and glue journal prompt. This allows children to draw and write to show their mathematical thinking.

As you begin using these problems you will note that they vary in difficulty. For some problems, students will simply need time to think and discuss their solutions. Others will require students to draw, act out, or model with math manipulatives. If you are reading problems from the task cards during a brief transition, you can flip through to find one that students will be able to solve without additional tools. When working with small groups, differentiate by choosing the problems that best meet the needs of your students.
