Description

In this lab, students will scoot across the classroom or gym while their partners time their motion. When they've come back to the starting line, group members can calculate the speed of the scooter.

This lab allows every participant to have two trial runs - scooting forwards and scooting backwards, with up to four members in a group.

This activity includes the files for the lab pamphlet, answer key, and images of the lab in action.

This is a fun lab that can be setup quickly and can be completed by students in a single period (45 to 60 minutes).

Required materials: Furniture Dollies or Gym Scooters, Timers, Calculators, Meter Sticks. Also, a large, open area for scooting - at least 15 meters (10 meters forward and back with 5 extra meters for the other members of the groups as they time and spectate).

Love this resource! My students had so much fun. I don't think they even realized they were doing work! This is a great lab to do to start the wheels running on velocity and acceleration, too!

NGSSMS-PS2-2
Plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object’s motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object. Emphasis is on balanced (Newton’s First Law) and unbalanced forces in a system, qualitative comparisons of forces, mass and changes in motion (Newton’s Second Law), frame of reference, and specification of units. Assessment is limited to forces and changes in motion in one-dimension in an inertial reference frame, and to change in one variable at a time. Assessment does not include the use of trigonometry.
