Description

This Lab Safety Poster Project is a creative, student-centered way to reinforce essential lab safety rules in middle and high school science classrooms. By designing their own posters, students learn to communicate safety expectations clearly while expressing their creativity.

This resource includes everything you need to introduce, implement, and assess the project with minimal prep time. It also includes a Canva presentation with four student poster examples to help guide and inspire your class.

What’s Included:

  • Student instructions and project overview
  • Clear poster requirements and guidelines
  • Editable rubric
  • Teacher notes and implementation tips
  • Materials list
  • Optional Canva presentation with 4 student examples
  • Extension activity: Gallery Walk with peer reflections
  • Suggestions for using posters as a lab safety review tool

Learning Objectives:

  • Reinforce key science lab safety rules
  • Build visual communication and presentation skills
  • Encourage student creativity, neatness, and responsibility

Project Overview:

Students will choose one science lab safety rule and create an 8.5 x 11 inch poster that communicates it clearly and creatively. Posters must include a readable safety rule, colorful visuals, and appropriate school content. Each poster will be assessed using a rubric that evaluates clarity, creativity, color use, appropriateness, and required identification.

This is an excellent project for the beginning of the school year, during lab safety review, or as a refresher before major lab work begins.

Best For:

  • Middle and high school science
  • Life science, chemistry, or general STEM classrooms
  • Back-to-school activities
  • Lab safety week
  • Sub plans or enrichment assignments

Help students take ownership of lab safety while developing real-world communication skills. This activity blends science, creativity, and critical thinking in a meaningful way.
