This activity allows student to practice counting on as a strategy for addition. It helps them get the big number in their head and count up the other number using the dots on the ladybug.
It is differentiated by having the first sheet for students that need basic level practice. The second sheet allows students to choose their first number. Some students could be adding 10+6 while others are adding 56+6, while others are adding 1,235+6. With students picking their 'just right numbers,' they can all be learning at their level.
This activity addresses the following Common Core standards:
1.OA.5 Relate counting to addition and subtraction.
1.0A.6 Add and subtract within 20, emonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10.
2.OA.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.
