Description

Purpose(s):

The idea that individuals learn more efficiently via different modes of instruction ("learning styles") remains strongly contested. While some research supports the notion that our unique preferences are correlated with differences in the way we engage and process new information, more recent reports have debunked this theory, showing stronger evidence that students learn their best when the material is taught to them in a variety of different ways as opposed to only one way, even if that way is their preferred way to learn. In the first Google Slides lesson ("Learning Styles"), students learn about the three types of learning styles: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactical. Students are then administered a Learning Styles Quiz to determine which learning style(s) are most aligned with their personal preferences. Students are then introduced to specific study skills and strategies that appeal to a variety of learning styles and identify which might work well for them. As a fun, hands-on wrap up activity, students work in groups to create a mini-lesson that is taught to engage a specific learning style!

In the second Google Slides lesson ("Multiple Intelligences"), students are introduced to Howard Gardener's Theory of Multiple Intelligences. In learning about each, students examine their own strengths ("smarts") and interests to determine their top intelligences. Students also learn which career pathways might appeal to their unique intelligences.

ADDITIONAL EXTENSION ACTIVITIES:

Included in the lesson folder are (3) FREE supplemental activities!

  1. Learning Styles Quiz - Short self-assessment that provides students with a learning style "score" for each type: visual, auditory, and kinesthetic/tactile.
  2. Learning Styles Handout - Outlines learning strategies for auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and tactile learning styles.  Students consider how knowledge of their learning style(s) can help them be a better learner in the classroom and when tackling their assignments.
  3. Multiple Intelligences Worksheet - Prompts students to identify their top "intelligences" and review study skills and learning strategies that relate to these strength areas.

HOW TO USE: This lesson can be used as a stand-alone classroom workshop, or, as part of a full-course seminar/counseling curriculum. COMING SOON:"Middle School SEL BUNDLE" option to purchase full package, which includes an entire year's worth of customizable SEL classroom curriculum!
