Description

This mini unit will allow your students to learn the 5 main text structures by learning their definitions, reading samples and even crafting their own text structure paragraphs! Each text structure is broken down into 2 days with an introduction day, making this about 11 days long.

The 5 main text structures covered are: Description, Chronological, Compare & Contrast, Problem & Solution and Cause & Effect.

There are 6 teacher slide decks in which instruct on the text structures with notetaking and videos as well as lead students through crafting their own paragraph written in the learned text structure and a final multiple choice question for extra practice. There is a student packet that can be printed and copied in which students will take notes on the text structures, create a brainstorm and then space to write a paragraph. The topic of all examples is nonfiction weather and natural disasters. Some samples are books from EPIC, which you can get free access to or find a similar example. The teacher samples are all based on blizzards. Students could write about any nonfiction topic, but to keep the "theme," students could write about earthquakes, hurricanes, or tornadoes. In order to build background knowledge on these natural disasters for students to write about, students can do their own research or feel free to check out our Tornado, Hurricane & Earthquake DIGITAL background knowledge packets listed in our TPT store.

If you're interested in creating a Nonfiction Magazine Project, which combines the text structures paragraphs with knowledge of text features, check out our Nonfiction Magazine Project in our TPT store! There is also a BUNDLE available with all of these resources combined!
