Description
What is a meaningful way to relate Riemann Sums to integration? In this introductory lesson on approximating area of an irregular shape, we will explore graphically, numerically (in charts) and algebraically how to determine a Right Riemann Sum and a Left Riemann Sum.
Concepts in this lesson are:
- Riemann Sums solved using a graph.
- Riemann Sums determined from a function with and without technology.
- Determining Riemann Sums from a chart with regular intervals and with varying widths.
- Determining if the approximation is an overestimate or an underestimate.
The no prep lesson and worksheet are easy for students to follow and complete. You can print this lesson and use it as an in-class activity or download the digital learning choice for distance learning students. Even if you have a hybrid class, both types of students can access this lesson. This can also be used for students who were absent when the instructor taught this lesson. You can even leave this lesson for a substitute to hand out.
Included
· Step-by-step lesson with examples.
· 7 “Check for Understanding” problems with answers in text.
· 20-problem worksheet with separate solution guide.
· 4 multiple-choice question formative assessment.
AP Standards:
LIM-5.A
LIM-5.A.1
LIM-5.A.2
LIM-5.A.3
LIM-5.A.4
An alternative way to use this lesson is as a review for the AP Exam. Use the “Quick Quiz” to determine if students have mastered these standards.
