Description
This math flipchart for Promethean Board teaches students the basic skills of probability. This flipchart is aligned with 9.5 Houghton Mifflin Math - 1st grade. The lesson opens with a word problem in which students must use their prior knowledge of fractions to answer. Next, is a quick review (test prep) and lesson quiz (pre-test) derived from the text. Next is a title page introducing the lesson and then a page stating the lesson's objectives. The lesson then introduces vocabulary term(s): certain, equally likely, less likely, more likely, impossible, predict, and probable, along with their definitions and a higher order thinking prompt about probability. The next several slides are visuals demonstrating the meaning of the vocabulary words. The first activity invites students to utilize their knowledge of the terms and are shown visuals and are asked to identify the bags that match the likelihood of the description within the questions. The next page they are given stars in jars and are to indicate more, equally, or less likely based on the jar they are given. For the next activity, the teacher can get creative! A bag with cube manipulatives is displayed on the screen in which the teacher can ask students a variety of questions and show demonstrations (you can copy/paste and/or delete if you want to alter the number of cubes in the bag). The next activity is a really neat link to an online probability spinner game. The game allows you to make adjustments to the spinner displaying how much of each color you would like, let the kids make predictions (maybe in groups or partners and make it a competition), then spin a select number of times, and when you're ready click "results" and the game displays a graph of your outcome. The next page allows for review and closure. Last is a math journal prompt that incorporates drawing.
