Description
This game is especially designed for developing attention to detail. They are self correcting and can be used by children of any age, and in any country, as they do not require any language. They train the faculty of sight, the child’s visual perception, training the eye to recognize and distinguish, to see forms, shapes, edges and spaces, as well as the relationship between these. The games also stimulate the mathematical mind. Symmetry is one of the most elementary terms in geometry, and by playing Pattern Building symmetry is explored, through orientation and mirroring. This contributes to a flexibility and elasticity of the mind, as well as creativity and imagination.
Children love to play and learn best through explorations. Our activities cater to the anthroposophical approach to learning, nurturing the child holistically, through intellectual, artistic, and practical skills. The learning theories of Montessori education are an integral part of these activities, supporting the child’s sensorial development from concrete experiences toward an abstract understanding. It is through their own discoveries, self-correction, and Aha! moments, that these games support a deeper learning. We hope that you will discover the value children experience while engaging in this activity, and feel inspired to continue to explore our other games and activities.
Suitable for children age 9 and above. Adults enjoy this activity too.
Our activities are great new addition to your Montessori classroom or home schooling environment. By creating all our levelled materials, you will offer an amazing exploration through which children will be able to develop their mental capacity to see and understand simple to complex patterns. With focus, children can quickly make great progress.
If you are a class teacher and don’t have the possibility to work one-on-one with your students, we suggest offering the activity to smaller groups of 4-6 children. While working, ensure students are spread apart as much as possible. This will help them focus and develop understanding, rather than looking around and comparing what others are doing.
Complex Patterns (12) are built using 25 Base Cards. It builds on the concept of mirror images which requires children to become aware that things can have all of the same parts AND be different. Continued play with this activity helps children learn - to look to see and understand, persevere, focus attention, compare to find mistakes and self-correct. Over 5 years exploring and conducting research we observed skills such as creativity, mathematical thinking, visual discernment, flexibility, spatial perception, and symmetry emerge over time.
In our research, the duration of each session hinges on the child’s ability to maintain focus. We have found improvement in attention and ability to engage in activities for longer increments of time, even with children initially presenting with attention difficulties. Regular opportunities (at least 1 time/week) to work with our games and activities helps support this development. Feel free to contact us to know more about our research: aurogames-kalvi@auroville.org.in.
This game comes with clear, step by step game instructions. There are 25 Base Cards, 12 Complex Patterns, and 3 sheets of elements (all the small parts that make up the base cards) to print in color. For ease of use and to last longer, the printed Base Cards and elements can to be and glued on cardstock, and the Complex Patterns can be laminated.
