Description

National School Library Standards direct School Librarians to go beyond mere documentation rules and teach students the full range of concepts.

In accord with NSL Standards, the No Sweat Library Research Lesson: Learning Intellectual Property and Bibliographic Citation is the perfect starting point for library lessons on Academic Honesty. This lesson uses a positive responsibility approach and gives students a deep conceptual understanding of the legal & ethical issues regarding their research assignments.

Students learn best when content and skills are taught in context, so this lesson integrates the concept of intellectual property with the skills for bibliographic citation.

The lesson begins with a short direct instruction that introduces intellectual property, and follows with a guided hands-on activity to practice bibliographic citation. During independent practice, students can begin their own project with a documentation sheet to record citations for their initial research sources.

This library research skills lesson can be completed in one class period, and is suitable for any middle school subject area.
