  • Light waves (transverse waves)
  • What happens when light strikes an object (reflection, refraction, transmission, and absorption)
  • How light travels through objects (transparent, translucent, and opaque)
  • Visible Light
  • How humans see colors
  • The relationship between energy and light
  • How radiant energy can be transformed into other forms of energy such as mechanical, electrical, and thermal

This Light Unit also comes with three bonus lessons about the electromagnetic spectrum, how humans see black and white, and the differences between natural and artificial light. The information from these bonus lessons is not included on the assessment found in this unit, but these lessons provide some additional hands-on activities that can be used to reinforce the concepts listed above.

This Light Unit closely aligns with most science standards related to teaching light. It is also aligned with both the 2010 and 2018 Virginia science SOLs. It is aligned with science SOL 5.3 if using the 2010 standards and science SOL 5.6 if using the 2018 standards.
