Description

Light, Heat and Solar Energy - Mini Unit is a two lesson mini unit that has 10 printable worksheets and activities, 2 lesson plans, a unit quiz, and a 25 slide power point with animations that your students will love! This all-inclusive unit contains everything you need to teach your students about light, heat and solar energy.

Lesson one addresses the following guiding question: “What are light, solar and heat energy and how are they produced?” Your students will build deep knowledge about three important forms of energy all of which are produced by the Sun. This unit has excellent visuals and several different examples for them to learn from and think critically whether they are answering a higher order thinking or quiz question from the power point, or they are using the energy stations or unit assessment to test the all the skills they have learned in this unit. In lesson one, students will take notes on their interactive notebook learning map provided, while they listen to you teach a direct instruction lesson that goes along with the 25 slide animated power point included in this product. Your students will learn so much from the carefully thought out animations included in this presentation. You won’t see animations like this anywhere else with custom clipart and well thought out and carefully timed animations designed to enhance their knowledge on how light energy travels through space, how solar energy can be converted to electricity, how heat energy travels and operates, as well as why these forms of energy are so important. They will also have a great time testing their knowledge at the end of the power point presentation with a five question quiz, with immediate feedback for great review!

Lesson two is an investigation activity where students will rotate through different science stations and analyze the higher order thinking questions and answer intelligently. These can also just be used as science centers or individual review worksheets. The only material required is a flashlight and other materials that can be found around the classroom like paper, cardboard and a plastic water bottle! In station one, students will be given given four images and be asked to decide which forms of energy these images are producing. Then they will explain how they know this. In station two, students will focus on heat energy conducting various tasks based on their knowledge of heat energy. Station 3 is an experimentation activity where students will test the transparency of different classroom items and then answer think and respond questions. Station 4 is a worksheet in which students will read, think and diagram to further their understanding of solar energy and how it works. If you need additional stations or choose to substitute one of these stations with something else, you can use one of the two reading comprehension worksheets included, or the light energy – manmade or natural think and respond activity. This unit also includes an optional STEAM activity where students can make s’mores in a pizza box utilizing the heat energy from the Sun to cook it. This can also be done at home for extra credit if you don’t have time in class.

This unit will fill at least three science blocks but potentially even four or five depending on the length of your science period. To finish off the unit, students will have the opportunity to take a 12 question end of unit quiz to assess their knowledge about everything they have learned about in this unit.
