I loved using this activity to help my students HOW to use a ruler. Time is not often taken to help students know how to lay a ruler flat, where to place your hands, etc. but this activity made the students take the time to listen and to understand the skill that is necessary on how to use a ruler. I printed a few of each design so the students never knew which one they were getting and then they wanted to go back and do more.

Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares, describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of, fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for these examples that decomposing into more equal shares creates smaller shares.
