Description

Oh, those sneaky little linking verbs! They look innocent enough, but their sentence-tangling ways can really throw adult ESL students for a loop, especially when adjectives start popping up after the verb instead of before the noun like usual.

If your students are still asking, “Wait...is that verb linking or just pretending to be,” these Linking Verbs Task Cards are just what you need to reinforce the concept in an engaging, interactive, and low-prep way.

WHAT’S INSIDE THIS DOUBLE DOSE OF PRACTICE?

You’re getting two sets of linking verb task cards in this bundle! One focuses on creativity and personal expression, and the other is packed with structured grammar review.

Set 1: Sensory Linking Verbs (48 Cards)

Help students use linking verbs with sensory adjectives through open-ended questions like:

  • What tastes bland?
  • What feels smooth?
  • What smells rancid?

This set encourages full-sentence answers and helps students apply linking verbs in meaningful, real-life ways. It’s perfect for speaking practice, warm-ups, and collaborative group work.

Note: Because these are open-ended, there’s no answer key, but the conversations they spark? Totally worth it!

Set 2: Linking Verb Grammar Practice (20 Cards)

This structured set rotates through four question types so students can tackle linking verbs from all angles:

  • select the linking verb
  • correct the sentence
  • choose the best linking verb
  • finish the sentence with an appropriate linking verb

This set does come with an answer sheet and full answer key. It’s perfect for independent work, exit tickets, or grammar centers.

Bonus: Digital Versions Included via Easel!

Teaching a paperless class? Need last-minute sub plans? Have an adult student who emailed asking for extra practice at 9 pm? (Yes, it happens!)

Both sets come with a digital Easel counterpart, so you’re covered whether you’re teaching in-person, online, or somewhere in between.

Perfect For:

  • adult ESL learners
  • high school ELL
  • grammar review stations
  • Writing and speaking warm-ups
  • sub plans, homework, or extra practice

Give your students the practice they need to recognize, use, and feel confident with linking verbs, without the groans or grammar headaches!

I LOVE using your task cards in my college ESL course. I teach writing, but I need ways to get students speaking more. In the past, I've used your task cards in small groups as a way for students to get to know each other and collaborate on a topic we are learning, as extra credit (if they present their answers in front of the class), and just as a way to get students having fun :) These are always well worth it!

Thank you so much for this feedback! :) I love coming up with ways to get students to talk more. Generally, students practice grammar by filling out exercise after exercise, and while they have their place, practicing grammar in actual speech is also important. I am planning to make some more task cards, so stay tuned! :D
