Description

This includes an 11-page Word Document containing a list of 57 literary devices and terms students are likely to encounter in their reading or use as they write analyses of fiction, drama, and poetry.

Devices are grouped by page with other related devices. Groups include figurative language, characters/characterization, types of irony, sound devices, terms relating to style, structural elements, genre, and additional terms not easily labeled within a group.

Each device is presented with a thorough definition, a mnemonic device to aid memory of the definition, at least one example, and a statement of the device's function (i.e, what it accomplishes in terms of affecting the reader because of its inherent qualities).

The resource is useful on its own to shape teacher instruction, but if you make your own copy upon downloading it, you can also clear various fields and present it to students to fill in as a preview, review, or assessment.
