Description

Solving exponential and logarithmic equations are fun and engaging in this mystery project. In this project students will work to test the stories of four suspects, Mrs. White, Colonel Mustard, Miss Scarlet, and Professor Plum. Each suspect has a defense for the crime but only math can prove if they are telling the truth.

Exponential modeling using Newton's Law of Cooling is used to find the time of the murder. Exponential decay models are used to find how much poison was used.

This two-three day project is a great finale for an exponential and logarithmic unit. Students will enjoy the quest to solve the crime and be required to use critical thinking to make their final decision.

An editable file is included so that you can make adjustments to the assignment. An answer key and directions are included.

I used this activity as a review of our work with exponential and logarithmic functions in Precalculus. I thought it was interesting and engaging for my students. They struggled with pieces of information that needed to be Googled like the amount of blood in the body and the brewing temperature of coffee. Some also had trouble with the Laws of Cooling, but we just hadn't really covered that beforehand.

My students loved this activity! It provided a nice challenge for my gifted learners and I provided extra guidance for those who struggled to get started. The only challenge we had was that a google search provides 200 degrees as the brewing temp for coffee, which results in 45 minutes as the time since the coffee had been brewed. I found the word document used 1 hour ago as the time for Miss Scarlet and this would have worked with the 200 degrees. Overall great resource that I plan to use year after year!

This was a great project that my students were really interested in. I did add materials to guide them through some of the problems, due to time constraints we had and questions I knew would be difficult for them. It was really fun though and they learned a lot.

I used this as part of an assessment for my precalculus students. They loved it! Students worked in groups of 3 to 4. I did have to modify some of it to add more details based on the answer key to help my students.

The activity is well thought out and challenging without being too complex. I actually made it into a Desmos activity, which my kids really liked. Only question we had was that the initial brewing temperature of the coffee is stated as 180 degrees in the answer key but that doesn't seem to be noted anywhere else? There are quite a few of these murder mysteries out there and I am happy with this purchase. Thank you!!

Thanks for your review! The activity encourages students to seek out necessary information. The intention is that students will look up a typical brewing temperature to get started with this part. Thanks again and the Desmos activity is a great idea!
