_________________________________________________

Preparation

- Easy Prep! Print the student pages, staple or place in a folder, and your students are set to solve the math mystery.

- Have the video hook ready for viewing at the start of the lesson on an IWB, iPad, or computer monitor screen (optional).

- Editable suspects list included: This lets you change the suspect names to alter the final mystery outcome. Two alternative pre-made lists also included for a quick swap out.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Math Skills Required to Unlock Clues

There are five clues to crack to solve the mystery:

Clue 1: Divide Multi-Digit Numbers by 1-Digit Numbers (Interpret Remainders)

Clue 2: Dividing Numbers Ending in Zeroes (No Remainders)

Clue 3: Divide 2-Digit and 3-Digit Numbers by 2-Digit Numbers (Interpret Remainders)

Clue 4: Division Word Problems (Mainly dividing 4-Digit Numbers by 2-Digit Numbers. No Remainders.)

Clue 5: Divide by Powers of Ten (Write answers as Decimals).

Students must use critical thinking skills to determine what the clue tells them to eliminate from the list of possibilities.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Multiple Uses

- Suitable for independent, pairs, or group work.

- Use as part of your math centers, add to your sub tubs, make it part of your early finisher tasks, give for homework, or make it part of your classroom practice/review sessions.

I recommend pacing this activity by giving students one clue at a time. Once the whole class has completed a clue, then move on to the next clue either within the same lesson or the next math session. New math content presented? Make a lesson out of it by modeling the math before diving into the clue. I like to say, "we must learn something new before attempting the next clue."

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

How long will this activity take?

Time to complete will vary anywhere between 30mins - 2 hours or more! It mainly depends on how familiar your students are with the math mystery format and how difficult they find math skills covered in the particular mystery. Please check the math skills outlined in the clues above to help determine suitability for your class.

My students struggled with long division. So I bought this and worked through one skill (one clue) every day with them. By the end of the week, they had so much fun figuring out whodunit that they scarcely believed they had been practicing a once-difficult skill.

Engaging and Effective Long Division Practice!

This Long Division Math Mystery Activity was a wonderful way to make long division practice more engaging and enjoyable for my 5th-grade students. The mystery format motivated students to stay focused, work carefully through each problem, and check their work to ensure accuracy before moving on to the next clue. I appreciated how the activity transformed a skill that many students find challenging into a fun and meaningful learning experience. The worksheets provided plenty of practice while encouraging problem-solving and perseverance. Students were excited to solve the mystery and remained engaged from beginning to end. This resource was easy to implement, well organized, and perfect for independent practice, math centers, review, or enrichment. If you're looking for a way to increase student engagement while reinforcing long division skills, this is an excellent resource. Highly recommend!
