Description
This lesson plan uses Looking Like Me by Walter Dean Myers to help students build self-awareness and resilience by exploring their unique identities. Through a guided read-aloud, students identify the many “titles” or roles they hold (such as friend, dancer, or reader), connect those identities to joyful, meaningful activities using the Build Positive Experiences strategy from Dialectical Behavior Therapy, and reflect on how these parts give them strength during challenges, supporting the development of Meaning in Life as a resilience skill. The lesson culminates in a hands-on “Mirror of Me” collage craft, where students visually represent their different parts and affirm how celebrating who they are helps them stay strong.
