My description below applies for all of my Teaching Social Studies through Classroom Management flipcharts. Each has a separate theme entirely, but they all function within the classroom the same way. The theme of this flipchart is the Lumber Industry.
If you are a teacher who does not have time to fit Social Studies into your curriculum, this can help you. It's something simple I've been doing in my class for years and it works like a charm.
Rather than spending a full 30-40 minute class period teaching Social Studies, I give my students a quick introductory story about the topic at hand in the morning and introduce them to this chart. Then throughout the day, students exhibiting good behavior move a marker on this flipchart. If the topic is the Transcontinental Railroad, the students add a piece of railroad to their group's railroad. If the topic is learning about the Westward Expansion movement, good behavior results in that students' group moving through the Cumberland Gap. And each group is rewarded some sort of prize at day's end. The reason this works is because the students will remember the story from the morning because it matters to them. Your entire day will take on the theme of this specific flipchart. It always works the same way, and it'll always work at accomplishing two goals cooperatively in the classroom, teaching Social Studies and keeping an orderly and motivated classroom. The end result is that you actually will never have to have a "Social Studies Time" during the day, as this lesson will function throughout the day during whatever subject you are instructing.
Most of these Classroom Management flipcharts are based on American History, because this is what is taught in my 5th grade classroom. I'll make more themed for whatever anyone needs if you send me an email. I have a few free that you could use if you'd like. They are ActivStudio flipcharts so you'd need an ActivBoard to use this. I will look into transferring these flipcharts onto Powerpoints but I'm not sure they will work as well.
