Description

Celebrate Matariki with this Level 2&3 Matariki Pop Up Star Art unit.

This unit explores the celebration of Matariki in a creative, meaningful way by enabling children to choose a star they can relate to. Tamariki learn about the meaning of each star of the Matariki constellation and choose one for their picture in celebration of Matariki.

This unit provides an introduction and exploration of tinting a colour (yellow) with white and shading a colour (blue) with black.

They cut the star out of corrugated cardboard and learn how to tint a colour (yellow) with white by painting it. They create a dark sky background on a piece of A4 cartridge paper by shading a colour (blue) with black. When dry, the star is attached to the background with a concertina-folded piece of paper to make it pop up from the background.

This resource comes with a printable unit plan and a Google slide show to support your teaching.

The unit plan includes:

  • a 9 page detailed unit plan with Level 2 and 3 achievement objectives, specific learning outcomes and possible assessment questions
  • detailed lesson plans split into activities for maximum flexibility and adapted to suit middle and senior school children
  • teacher introduction and preparation notes, a material list and a clear lesson sequence
  • an optional short writing task for the children to explain the selection of their three stars with two different samples to choose from

The Google slide show includes:

  • a 15 page slide show with supporting pictures and instructions for each step of the creative process targeted at middle and senior school children
