What others say

"These worked great for AP Language and Composition. I would have them prepped and ready so that any time we finished a little bit early, they could be pulled out. They were also really good for no pressure review right before the exam. "

Description

It's the beginning of the school year. Are you already thinking about the AP examination in May? Will your students be ready? Add these fun (and very quiet) active games to your lesson plans early on in the school year--and then keep the inclusion consistent! Have discussions about WHY each language feature example is a better exemplification of a specific language feature. Your kids will love getting out of their chairs for a change! Match Game! stemmed first from the idea that students could more easily learn about rhetorical features and their definitions collaboratively; however, over the years, I have “adjusted” Match Game! matches to encourage students to develop both their thinking and the language that describes the larger effects of an author’s use of language. Matches also foster collaborative work within class sections as well as create a learning-team atmosphere between course sections.

Matches require a timer and playing card sets that allow students to familiarize themselves with various rhetorical features, their definitions, and their uses in context. I’ve created multiple Match Game! card sets begin with easier features, definitions, and examples. (Watch for sets 4-6 on Teachers Pay Teachers soon!) As the year progresses, move to more difficult features and examples. For instance, Match Game Set #1—The Pink Set begins with recognizable rhetorical features and definitions—perhaps language features that reiterate material introduced in a prior school year such as analogy, allusion, colloquial language/dialect, connotation, hyperbole, irony, metaphor, personification, simile, and symbol. Match Game Set #2—The Gold Set continues with allegory, alliteration, apostrophe, dysphemism, euphemism, homily, metonymy, oxymoron, paradox, and sarcasm. Match Game Set #3—The Ocean Set continues with allegory, amplification, apostrophe, assonance, homily, metaphor, metonymy, onomatopoeia, paradox, and pun. Each rhetorical feature has a three-card grouping containing a rhetorical feature card, a definition card, and an example card.

Match Game! sets contain card groupings for up to ten terms, totaling 30 cards per set. If a class exceeds 30 students, students may pair up. And although ten features per set may be too many in some instances, 30 cards will allow class sizes of 27 to 30 to participate easily. When I encounter class sizes with fewer students, three-card groupings are simply removed to accommodate the class size. Additional card sets allow me to individualize Match Game! matches for various academic levels of student players.

In the Match Game! match, students silently match rhetorical feature cards, definition cards, and example cards into three-card sets in the shortest period of time possible while ensuring that all card sets are correctly matched. If multiple classes are competing, each class section competes for the shortest time. Alternatively, a single class section can compete against its best time.

Includes Sets #1 and #2--The Pink Set (PDF), The Gold Set (PDF), The Ocean Set (PDF), rationale, and detailed instructions (PDF) in a zipped file. Instructors, though, may use the set in any way they deem useful! Please connect with me if you have other game ideas to share!

When I print a set of cards, I print the cards in color on white cardstock, cut and paste a slightly larger card of cardstock to make the cards very sturdy, and then laminate and curve cut the edges. This process seems to make the set last the longest.
