Looking for a fun way to practice factoring skills?? This activity is a great way to reinforce factoring in a hands-on way. It includes a page with 10 Difference of Two Squares “links” to match the expressions with the corresponding factors. It is great to use in centers, groups, partners, individually, or as a game in class! (See ways it can be used below!)
HOW CAN IT BE USED?
This activity can be used in centers, partners, individually, or as a class!
- CENTERS: Include as one of your review centers. Cut up the links (the rectangles) ahead of time and mix them up. Have groups rotate around and create the factoring chains. *Pro-tip: LAMINATE the rectangles for use in future years!
- PARTNERS: Give a sheet to each group of two. Have them cut up the rectangles themselves (the rectangles are NOT in the correct order to begin with). Then have the partners create the factoring chain. One person can check the other person, or you can go around and check each group.
- INDIVIDUALS: Give a sheet to each student. Have each student cut up the rectangles themselves and put the chain in order.
- CLASS: Make a game out of it! Create a HUMAN CHAIN! Cut up however many rectangles you need for the whole class (this may mean you use multiple sheets and multiple colors of paper). Have them find the next links in the chain and link arms with the people who have the factors or expressions that match their own. This gets them up and MOVING and is a great way to help kids mingle with other students they may not usually interact with. *Pro-tip: Play MUSIC while they find their match to add more fun to the activity!
