Description

Create word problems using a "mad lib" style. Students will fill out a sheet asking for objects, names, places, etc. then fill in the corresponding blanks in the word problems to create a silly sounding problem!

There are four word problems:

1) Pythagorean Theorem solving for hypotenuse

2) Multi-step equation (combining like terms to solve, variable on one side)

3) Multiplying scientific notation

4) Volume of cone and sphere combined

I use it as the project portion of the midterm. Students enjoy their unique sounding word problems and all students will have different equations and solutions to number 2 and 3 depending on their mad lib choices.

There is a slide of teacher directions and two student pages to print, because of some problems having different solutions there is no answer key.

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Apply the Pythagorean Theorem to determine unknown side lengths in right triangles in real-world and mathematical problems in two and three dimensions.
Know the formulas for the volumes of cones, cylinders, and spheres and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.
Perform operations with numbers expressed in scientific notation, including problems where both decimal and scientific notation are used. Use scientific notation and choose units of appropriate size for measurements of very large or very small quantities (e.g., use millimeters per year for seafloor spreading). Interpret scientific notation that has been generated by technology.
