Make up work can be the bane of my existence – it is difficult to encapsulate the classroom experience outside of the room. Also, if you have students that are frequently out, keeping track of who is working on what is a pain.
My system is twofold – if the student will not be in to get work, I have a form that allows you to include more details. This is designed to help parents and students get information and classwork easily, even without you there to explain. Generally I attach any worksheets or readings to the back of these forms.
When students pick up make up work, I require them to write down the assignment. This gives them the chance to record what they must do and when it is due. Also, they can ask questions and get help while the assignment is give – this decreases their ability to claim they did not understand or did not know about work.

I plan to implement this make-up work form this year. Keeping track of make-up work due to absences has always been a pain in the neck. This will make it much easier to organize.
