What a fabulous opportunity your classroom Maker Space can provide for young scientists and engineers to dream, plan, invent, test, and ready their creations for sharing with others! This resource is the sixth in a series of Maker Tasks, perfect for group or independent work. Also perfect as a distance learning or home school project! Use a Maker Task as inspiration for budding geniuses during your genius hour, or offer them as starter ideas for science fair projects. They also make great performance assessments at the conclusion of a science unit, ensuring that students have considered the concepts learned in light of the engineering process. Maker Tasks ask students to include all aspects of STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) in their work. These tasks also offer opportunities for differentiation within your Science class.

The “Design a Tree House” Maker Task challenges students to plan dimensions, materials, and a floor plan for a structure that can safely be built among the branches of a living tree. Safety, strength, and potential use must all be considered. Students are asked to plan and construct a model that will be a fun and safe getaway for kids with friends and family included. All aspects of STEAM should be used in the planning and building of each Tree House model.

Each Maker Task will include:

Teacher Notes

an invitation to the Task, including details of how to proceed

a suggested list of supplies unique to the Task and letters to ask for donations

a STEM Journal customized for that particular task

a simpler verson of the STEM Journal for differentiation

All student pages are in grayscale.

I hope you will enjoy using these Tasks to focus on Science and Engineering Practices

in your learning community!

I plan on using this with my RTI level 1 group that I am working with this year. It brings in other subjects besides science and I enjoy that.

This is a great, well-planned resource. There is enough detail to make it clear what should be happening at each step of the process, but leaves plenty of room to put your own spin or emphasis on it, or to modify the task. The layout is gorgeous, and the booklets were so easy to put together!
