Making Connections Unit on Google Slides: This Making Connections unit includes digital lessons and activities to help your students master RL.K.7 and RI.K.7, connecting words to pictures. In the lessons and activities, students will practice connecting text to illustrations, text to photographs, and making personal connections such as text-to-self, text-to-text, and text-to-world.

This resource was created for distance learning and includes age-appropriate and engaging interactive lessons on Google Slides for young students to enjoy in Google Classroom, but can be easily downloaded as a PowerPoint file from your Google Drive if needed.

Digital Lessons

The following lessons include built in questions with automatic feedback to keep students engaged.

  1. What is a Connection?: I can explain what a connection is.
  2. Illustrations to Texts: I can explain the connection between illustrations and words.
  3. Photographs to Texts: I can explain the connection between photographs and words.
  4. Text-to-Self Connections: I can describe when a book reminds me of my life.
  5. Text-to-Text Connections: I can describe when a book reminds me of another book.
  6. Text-to-World Connections: I can describe when a book reminds me of the world around me.

NOTE: You can add elements to the existing slides (voiceover, text boxes, videos, etc.), but please do NOT add slides to or delete slides from the lesson deck. Doing so can "break" the interactive components.

  • If you do ever accidentally "break" or lose the lesson or activities decks, you can click the link in the PDF to download new copies to your Google Drive - no worries! :)

✍ What's the Connection?: Sort picture cards by their topic/concept.

✍ Illustrate the Sentence: Read a sentence and match the correct illustrated picture card.

✍ Photograph the Sentence: Read a sentence and match the correct photograph picture card.

✍ Reading Passages: Read to make connections to the text. Spiral review of main idea and fiction vs. nonfiction is included.

Teacher Tips

  1. Accessing the Google Slides: Your download will include a PDF with links to the Google Slides. When prompted, click "Make a Copy" to save to your Google Drive.
  2. Creating an Assignment: When assigning the activities, first make a copy of the slide deck. Then, remove any slides you do NOT want assigned.
  3. Personalize the Lessons: Check out videos on YouTube for steps to add your voice-over to the lesson slides so YOU can be the one teaching your students. It's super easy to do and is a great way to personalize your distance learning lessons!
