Description

Teaching inferring or "making inferences" is a part of every strong reading program. Making inferences is natural for some readers--but some need explicit practice. Add in working on sequence of events, and you have a perfect reading minilesson!

This set of 24 making inferences task cards is perfect to use as a practice opportunity in literacy centers or as an instructional tool when working with students needing extra practice in this area. Cards are made with an easy-to-read font and are available in color and black and white.

What do you get?

  • 24 task cards in black and white and color
  • Digital access via Google Slides
  • Recording sheets
  • Teaching tips

The ability to read a text and use “clues” to help figure out what might be going on in a story and what the characters are like is a critical skill for students who are working toward reading more challenging texts.

“Reading between the lines”, or “inferring” is the ability to do this smoothly so that comprehension is complete. These cards give the opportunity for teachers to see what students can do with texts—what conclusions they can draw, and if they can place the event within the context of a story.

Each card provides a short situation and then asks students to discuss two separate things—to make an inference about the situation or the characters, and then to think about what might have happened before and after! By doing so, these cards can really help with some focused practice that can then be carried over into students’ independent reading.

Whether you teach from the Common Core or any other set of rigorous standards, being able to infer is a critical reading skill. Remember to model YOUR thinking as you discuss these as well.

Also included are several recording sheets and supplemental ideas to allow for flexibility of use. No answer key is provided as there are no “right” answers.

ENJOY! Watch your students grow in their ability and begin making inferences in their own reading! Teaching tips and other ideas are included as well.
