Description

Students who struggle with text have difficulty getting a complete “picture” of what’s going on. One way to simplify instruction is to teach inferences using only picture clues. Pictures can be decoded more quickly and are accessible to all readers.

Once students understand how to find evidence, apply schema, and make reasonable inferences using these bridging activities, the skill can more easily be transferred to written selections.

This download provides step-by-step instruction. Each lesson builds on the one before it. There are fourteen (14) worksheets. Suggested pacing allows for six (6) lessons. In addition, there are (2) easy-to-grade assessments. Images print well in both color and B&W.

This product relates to the following CCSS standard(s). Please note that this list may represent only a partial list of all standards and/or strands that apply.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RI.3.1 - 5.1 Refer to details and examples in a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences from the text.

I use these with third graders. Having a visual representation to help teach inferencing is a great scaffold to make a complex skill a little more concrete. Thanks!
