Description

Struggling secondary readers will read short, easy text enabling them to make educated guesses, which builds confidence to use the skill for more difficult text.

Objective: students will use evidence in text and consider their own background knowledge to make educated guesses as they answer the who, what, when, where, why & how questions.

Time: This particular worksheet takes less than 30 minutes to complete and is super easy. (More time needed if doing the optional activity at the end.)

What it looked like when I used it: When I first introduced this concept, it seemed overwhelming to my struggling readers. Until I used this, giving them success, which in turn gave them confidence.

Procedure: We started out doing the first story together, then they did one with a partner, and the last two on their own. By the end, they had it down and were ready to move to more complicated text.

What is included:

  • 4 short stories with easy questions where they have to make an educated guess using clues within the story.
  • 2 short stories (which are a tad more difficult) where students have to use the clues given within the story to guess the mood of a character.
  • Teacher's Guide
  • Optional activity

Thank you so much for your review! I appreciate the feedback so that I can make quality products for teachers who experience similar difficulties my students faced in the reading classroom.

Students thought it was easy. It was good for me to use to check for understanding. NO answer key is included. One isn't really needed though.

Thank you for taking the time to review this product. I intentionally made it super easy (as I explained in the product description) because my students at the time really struggled with this concept and they needed something super simple in order to make a guess based on easy to see clues. I'm glad that it was good for you to check for understanding knowing they were ready for more complicated text.

Hello! I want to make products that students gain confidence in the skill they're learning. Do you have a suggestion to take it from "okay" to "high quality"? I'd love your feedback.
