Description
Children (and adults) have a difficult time with emotions. Many children have trouble recognizing how they are feeling and often think they are bad or wrong for feeling certain ways. Some kids get taken over by their emotions, and others try to shun negative emotions all together, neither of which is healthy.
This PowerPoint focuses on teaching children healthy ways to deal with negative emotions. It's a part mindfulness-based approach where the children learn to accept and express how they are feeling, and is then combined with strategies to keep emotions from ruling them.
Overview of PowerPoint
•Begins by explaining the nature of emotions: they come, stay for a while and make you feel a certain way, then leave.
•Explains that negative emotions can be healthy and shouldn't be avoided with examples of the importance of certain "bad" emotions
•Helps students learn to balance their emotions and avoid shunning emotions or letting them take over
•Students are given tools to help them deal with negative emotions- Accept how they are feeling, talk to someone, use a calming-down technique, and problem-solve to prevent further outbursts.
•A list of calming-down techniques is provided, along with a poster
You may need to split this into two sessions if your students have trouble focusing for too long. I tried shortening it, but decided I didn't want to leave out anything important.
Thanks!
