Description

Each year we have to teach map skills - many of us are doing the same paper mache' globes, salt maps, or continents and oceans quizzes. Instead of having your student recite what they see on a map, have them apply their knowledge by making their own!

These activities include the following skills: bird's eye view, compass rose, landforms, latitude and longitude, map keys/legends, and scale. Students will make their own maps and include many of the key terms used. Math cross-curricular opportunities are available with map scale, as well as ELA cross-curricular opportunities are available with vocabulary use.

This mini-unit includes:

  • A sample breakdown of day-to-day activities
  • Vocabulary list that you can have students fill in, post in your LMS, or provide to them for future reference
  • Resources if you need to take some of this content online for distance learning
  • Map Your Room – bird’s eye view, map key, scale

**Online programs and directions provided for Distance Learning **

  • Create Your Own Vacation Spot – compass rose, landforms, latitude and longitude, map key, scale

** Online programs and directions provided for Distance Learning **

  • State Cookie Map – elevation, landforms of your given state (examples given for Indiana), map key
