Description

This March Color the Room bundle is a great way to introduce write the room to your early learners who are struggling to form letters, read or write. Students are asked to find a card and color it to match on the recording sheet, testing their observation and coloring skills.

As a first grade teacher in a low socio-economic setting, I often had a very skewed classroom spectrum of students who could read, struggled with letter names, and others who were several reading levels ahead.

I needed an activity that would be fun and engaging for all learners yet not require many reading skills to complete so my centers would be independent. Creating Color the Room helped fill that need.

Reasons to Love Color the Room:

♥ Two recording sheet styles are included to allow for easy differentiation of stamina or fine motor abilities. Simply choose the larger scale 6 picture recording sheet for struggling learners or the 12 picture recording sheets for quick finishers and on-target students.

♥ Encourages students to have self-control by providing an engaging activity they can easily complete independently (a great precursor to launching centers or workstations)

♥ Use to introduce learning centers so that students can practice the procedure and not have to focus on the skill

♥ Builds oral language and preliteracy skills by offering brightly colored task cards connected to favorite stories and concepts that will get them talking and sharing as they color with their friends

♥ Practice fine motor skills and pencil grip when holding crayons or colored pencils to complete their assessment sheet

♥ Young artists will focus on details in the pictures to match the colors correctly which will can be connected to the skill of studying words or pictures in stories for comprehension

♥ Use as a standalone activity for early finishers, as a “filler” activity for substitutes or as a fun holiday activity during a class party

FAQ:

How much time does this take to set up?

These centers are designed to be very low prep. Simply print all the pages, laminate the 2 pages of task cards (2 pages per topic) along with the I Can card, choose and photocopy the recording sheets. Then, either hang the task cards around the room or place them in a small basket at your center station with the copied recording sheets.

I recommend laminating the cards which have been created with simple cut lines and no paper waste (3 cuts per page of task cards). For durability, I’ve always cut and then laminate my cards which takes longer but eliminates the peeling edges if using a large-scale school laminator.

Who should purchase this product?

I created this center activity with the early educator in mind. If you are a homeschooling parent, preschool or preK teacher than this would be for you. Do not purchase if you are looking to tie it into a specific Common Core Standard or have students not needing to master fine motor, coloring skills or preliteracy skills (such as building stamina and oral language).

How long does this activity last?

This bundle is meant to be a month-long activity. Each of the 5 activities in the bundle are meant to last for one center rotation or activity time. If your center rotation lasts 2 weeks, this will be a 2-week activity.

My students love our Color the Room time! This is one of the times that they are able to show that they can work independently and they truly enjoy that. This is one of the best resources I have found that engages ALL my students.
