Math Anchor Chart UPPER GRADE- Discourse/Pair Share/Depth& Complexity Icons

Description

Student Discourse can be challenging to teach. Using this resource to support expectations with primary students, around math literacy and discourse, during times of collaboration between peers, can support students in understanding appropriate behaviors to engage in when talking to another about their work, strategies used, and engage with each other in a manner involving more critical thinking.

Utilizing Kaplan's Depth and Complexity Icons supports students thinking more critically and more deeply about the topics at hand. It also gives them a focus during discourse and feel that they have a guide in what areas they should be discussing or how to branch out and deepen their discussion or ideas with the use of the icons.

Using these sentence frames will allow you as the teacher and your students to build a solid foundation to then begin discussing topics and allowing there to be moments of questioning and disagreement in a safe environment.

***Another way to bump up meaningful talk is to have partners sit facing knee to knee or stand directly facing one another. Then when the talk time has expired, have students shake hands and say, "Thank you for your time." before returning to their seat.
