Description

This set of engaging maths challenge problems encourages your students to think critically using multiple perspectives as they figure out the solutions at their own pace, using their own preferred strategies.

What's Included

There are three maths challenges included in this resource.

In the first activity - The Four Fours Challenge - students will need to use four 4s and any of the operations to create equations that equal each number from 1-26. (And it IS possible!)

Some will be easy for the children to work out and others will be more challenging. Two levels are included so that you can decide how challenging you want to make the task.

In the second activity - What Order? - students will use their knowledge of the order of operations to work out which signs go between each number so that the maths sequence is correct.

In the third activity - How Many Ways? - students will show their understanding of the order of operations to come up with as many different equations as they can that result in the given answer.

How To Use It

Use these critical thinking challenges in maths centres, for early finishers, as a class competition, for homework or however else you'd like to!

This was a very interesting and challenging way to practice order of operation skills for my students. Even my co-teacher and I worked through them to see who figure the problems out faster ;)

Students enjoyed this activity. It was challenging for my high level thinkers to try to complete all 1-14. It was fun for my lower level thinkers to get 4 or 5 of them. I ended up just giving them just 1 example on the sheet and not two.
