Description

Math worksheets and games are great for math centers, but it can be hard to differentiate for these activities. Math choice boards give students choice while differentiating for each student's ability level.

Gifted education is also a great place to use choice boards to provide more challenging tasks while the rest of your students have options as well!

Features

  • 1 Choice Board page that differentiates the standards 1.OA.B.3
  • 9 Differentiated Activity pages that range from 1 through 3 difficulty. 1 being the easiest and 3 being hardest.
  • 6 Puzzle Pieces for specific activities
  • 9 Answer Sheets for all 9 activities

Activity Descriptions

  • Page 1 - Arrange equations that show two addends being flipped spots to equal the same sum
  • Page 2 - Show how two addends can be flipped using unifix cubes
  • Page 3 - Construct 2-addend equations from 3-addend equations using math tools
  • Page 4 - Match the 3-addend equation to the making a ten 2 addend equation
  • Page 5 - Match a sum to an addition number sentence
  • Page 6 - Change a 3-addend equation into a 2-addended equation using math tools
  • Page 7 - Identify the 3-addend equation that can make a group of ten
  • Page 8 - Compare two sets of addends and see if you get similar or different sums
  • Page 9 - Construct your own addition equation using math tools. Show how you can make it with the addends flipped

I use this in my 1st grade classroom to provide a challenge for my advanced students to check off their proficiency-based grading, while also providing practice opportunities for my struggling students to succeed.

Apply properties of operations as strategies to add and subtract. If 8 + 3 = 11 is known, then 3 + 8 = 11 is also known. (Commutative property of addition.) To add 2 + 6 + 4, the second two numbers can be added to make a ten, so 2 + 6 + 4 = 2 + 10 = 12. (Associative property of addition.)
