*Objectives and standards can be challenging for students to understand. “I Can” statements are a student friendly alternative. This pack contains “I Can” statements for each of the 5th grade Math Common Core Statements. Each statement, when prepared, is approximately 4.25 X 11” and will fit nicely into a small pocket chart. Print this set on 8.5 X 11” letter size paper and cut into strips. To add durability, print on card stock and/ or laminate.

*Included in this .zip file, is the same set of “I Can” statements suitable for printing on legal size paper (8.5 x14”) When prepared, each statement will be approximately 4.25 X 14” in size. **Be sure the change the paper dimensions on your printer when using this option.

*The Common Core Math Grad 5, “I Can” statements are color coded:
Blue - Operations and Algebraic Thinking
Green - Numbers and Operations in Base Ten
Orange - Numbers and Operations - Fractions
Red - Measurement and Data
Purple - Geometry

*The standard codes are displayed at the bottom left hand corner of each “I Can” statement in a color coded star. Display the “I Can” statements that are the focus of learning for the day, week or quarter. When standards have been mastered by most students, post on the classroom bulletin board or walls. Review often and bring attention to “I Can” statements frequently.

*Student Self Assessment (pages 41-44) - To keep students focussed on the objectives and reflecting on their own learning, self assessment is an important tool. The student assessment forms are a perfect tool for guiding students in this process. There is room for students to self reflect four times during the year.
