Description

This is a collection of 50 non-routine math challenge problems perfect to challenge and enrich your gifted and talented math students or any student you want to push and/or teach perseverance. Non-Routine math problems are problems that do not have a conventional way to solve them making them more challenging. There can be many ways to approach these types of problems. In addition to building perseverance, they will also build critical thinking skills and expand a student’s mathematical reasoning.

Because these are designed for younger students, they are not true non-routine problems. This means that older students and adults will be able to solve most of these problems fairly quickly; however, for a younger student, these are non-routine problems.

Each problem comes in three different formats: 1/2 page task card, a worksheet with questions, and a strip for use with a math journal. The task card version also has a Google Slide option!

There is a variety of problem types falling mainly under numbers, logic, and spatial, so you can differentiate by the different strengths and/or weaknesses of your individual students.

This entire pack is EDITABLE. This way you can alter problems if needed or create more.

These could be used in a lot of ways - I give more specifics in the preview if you would like to know more.

The product also includes 10 pages of answers/explanations (because I really try to explain each one!)

Please download the preview to see more of the specifics.

I also have this product for older students:

Non-routine Math Problems for Older Students

Some of these problems are also within my morning work packs (on the challenge problem section), so if you would rather have it that way, that is another option. Specifically my 3rd grade first half of the year pack uses 13 of these problems and my entire 2nd grade pack uses 18 of these problems. Some of the others are similar. As you can see, there are still a lot left to use in each grade level, but you may not need that many.

Therefore, if you would rather have one challenge problem a week that coincides with morning work, where many other skills are also practiced, you would probably be better off purchasing the morning work.

Below are the links to those two products in case you are more interested in that route:

2nd Grade Daily Math Morning Work Whole Year

3rd Grade Daily Math Morning Work 1st and 2nd Quarters

This resource is perfect! I love that I am able to assign this resource to students and they can work on independently at home, during small group intervention time when they have a laptop, or I can print these activities out and give them to students to work on independently. My students find these resources very engaging, the parents love these activities and find it easy to log them in and support them, and ultimately it’s been a great timesaver in my classroom to assign and allow students to work on. I even see students meeting their learning goals and desiring to have more after interacting with these resources.

Thank you so much! There is so much more to teaching math than just the basic standards, so I am glad you've been able to seamlessly integrate these into your instruction!

I loved using these with my groups of older students, I am so glad I found the younger version because it is wonderful for encouraging higher order thinking with my advanced 1st and 2nd grade groups!
