Secret Code Addition: Math Fact Fluency Game (Grades 1–2)
Skills Focus: Addition Facts 0–12 | RTI • Math Centers • Independent Practice

Make mastering addition facts exciting with this Secret Code Math Game—a fun, hands-on alternative to traditional worksheets and flash cards! Designed for first and second grade students, this interactive resource builds addition fluency using three different coded number grids and 120 secret code cards.

How It Works:

  1. Assign one of the three included grids to each student or group.
  2. Students draw a code card (e.g., M + S) and use the grid to decode the values of each letter.
  3. They write an addition sentence on the recording sheet.
    Example: If M = 11 and S = 7, they write 11 + 7 = 18.

Each grid includes 26 hidden values (A–Z) using the numbers 0–12, creating endless combinations and keeping students engaged!

What’s Included:

  • 3 Coded Number Grids
  • 120 Secret Code Cards (letter combinations)
  • Printable Recording Sheets
  • 18 pages

Use For:

  • Math Centers
  • Partner Games
  • Homework Alternatives
  • RTI (Response to Intervention)
  • Early Finishers
  • Indoor Recess

Students love the mystery of decoding, and teachers love the built-in fact fluency practice. Whether you're working on 1st grade addition strategies or helping 2nd graders master facts to 20, this resource brings fun and focus to your math lesson.

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
Determine the unknown whole number in an addition or subtraction equation relating three whole numbers. For example, determine the unknown number that makes the equation true in each of the equations 8 + ? = 11, 5 = ▯ - 3, 6 + 6 = ▯.
Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers.
